That's right, NVidia is out, ATI is in for Xbox 2.

As for differences between Xbox 2 and Gamecube 2, the fact that the cards will both be produced by ATi is irrelevant. If I stick the same back wheels as a Ferrari F50 on an old Austin Montego, do both cars become the same thing?

Meanwhile, back in the real world... It would be harder than you think to make it backward compatible, as some games feature code to produce custom effects from the programmable graphics card. Unless ATi's card would work identically to the nVidia's (unlikely if you're going to be realistic), then the ATi card will have to be capable of emulation of the Xchip. I don't see them getting much co-operation from nVidia to do this.

Xbox 2 Will be backwards compadable. They have time to insure this and all. It is not hard at all to do. The Engien wil be the same no matter who makes the graphics processor.

i'm just worried about backward compatibility.

I have two questions: now that ATI will be making both the XBOX 2 and the next Nintendo console, what will be the difference between the two? And another question: will the games for XBOX be backwards compatible with XBOX 2 then? Those games are produced with the nVidia chipset in mind.

Okay well this is a big step closer to be getting more detailed info on the next big system from Microsoft. I wonder what the specs will be on this new custom graphics card will be. I know the memory isn't the only important thing, but I'm still wondering if it'll be 256mb or not, I don't know if those new cards will come down in price in time to be able to go in the next system. I'm almost wondering if they would do somethin between 128 and 256, like say 192mb? who knows, just another thing to speculate on...

Both cmpanies are top in their class. They tend to keep a lead on each other only for a couple of months.

It doesn't really matter. Xbox 2 will have around the same secs no matter what company they pick.
